Oklahoma designer Cortney McClure had a fun project on her hands: transform a basement into a stylish and swanky family room that matched her client’s eclectic style. (Think swanky, moody, and perfect for entertaining!) The home is nestled on Delaware Avenue, one of the most sought-after streets in downtown Bartlesville, OK. The area is full of classic, historical homes and her clients—a young family with a small child and three dogs—were excited for the space to be a bit of a “surprise design moment” in the traditional area. Homeowner Mollie couldn’t be happier, telling us, “We are thrilled with the result! Cortney took an awkward layout and transformed it into something functional. She chose finishes that were authentic to our aesthetic and lifestyle, and we now have a beautiful, livable space where we (and our dogs!) spend every evening relaxing!”

The designer tells us more about the makeover:

First, what is this room used for? What were some of the design must-haves, both in function and in style?

The basement has always been used as a family room; it just didn’t have the right design elements that matched my client’s style. Creating a functional space that is family friendly and swanky enough for entertaining was top priority. The custom built in serves as a desk space, but also transitions into a dry bar / serving area when the room is full of friends. The room features a large sectional sofa, which is great for family movie nights, but also creates a fun and comfortable setting when hosting. The two custom swivel chairs can be utilized in the area with the sofa or turn them around and they are in the seating area with the stunning leather chaise. Multipurpose and functional! We also didn’t forget about the dogs — the rug in the sitting area is a dog bed! 

Do you have any favorite details?

The swivel chairs have to be my favorite element in the room. The contrast-y fabric is a focal point and really elevates the space. We also didn’t shy away from black leather and black paint in a darker space. The drama and richness really balance out all of the vibrant tones, keeping the room true to its moody vibe with minimal natural light and concrete floors. 

How long did the project take?

A fresh coat of paint, an updated hearth, and the built-in were the only changes made beyond furnishings, so the transformation didn’t take long at all!
